Welcome to Alterotopia, a place to explore power, transformative change and earthly belonging. An invitation to find ways to dance with the trouble, through creative encounters at the intersection of art, research, science and activism.
“Our task is to make trouble, to stir up potent response to devastating events, as well as to settle troubled waters and rebuild quiet places”
– Donna Haraway
Alterotopia is the second iteration of two practices coming together: the artistic practice of Marijke de Pous and the activist academic practice of Flor Avelino. Apart from finding resonance in the content of each others work, we share a passion to gain insight and strength from paradoxical thinking, to address the deeply rooted troubles and injustices of our time, and last but not least, a deep appreciation of the joys and beauty of life.
With Alterotopia we want to create a place to celebrate and strengthen resonating voices of difference, in recognition that we need each other to stay with the trouble.
As a starting point we have used the visual outcomes of our collaboration thus far to give shape to Alterotopia. Our hope is that Alterotopia will become the home of many other creative encounters at the intersections of art, research and activism. A place to share the audio, visual and written work that these encounters inspire, and an invitation to reflect and learn from the practices and methods we will experiment with.
If you are excited about what’s to come, we’d love to keep you in the loop! You can use the button below to receive updates as Alterotopia takes further shape.
We need each other to deal with the pain, and we need each other to celebrate the joy of life, while paradoxically, still staying with the trouble.
